Walter J. Boyne is the former director of the National Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian Institution and a widely recognized aviation author. In a 33-year career with the Air Force, Boyne piloted scores of planes for a total of more than 5000 hours. In the B-47, he logged 700 hours both for the Strategic Air Command's 330th Bomb Squadron at Castle Air Force Base, California, and again for the 4925th Test Group (Nuclear) at Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico.
